We provide neonatal family support to alleviate stress and improve wellbeing

Story

24 weeks in pregnancy I was diagnosed with cervical imcompetence, we were told our son had a "20 % chance of survival". My waters soon broke and labour was prevented twice. We were transferred to Royal Oldham Hospital for specialist NICU care. At 25 weeks gestation, I dilated and labour was established. Zachary was born, 06/08/2018, weighing 1bs 6oz (746g). We transferred to North Manchester neonates to begin our journey home.

We were kindly given a memory box from Spoons charity, containing small, essessential items; water bottle, pen/neonatal diary, milestone cards for first milk feed/ cuddles etc, a small octopuss (therapy for prem baby, it mimics plancenta and cord to prevent tube pulling), hand cream (perfect after so much handwashing/sanitizer!!). Most recently added specialised hand/foot print card. We have been able to store our own keepsakes in this box.

Soon followed was a 'sibling pack' for sisters and brothers to entertain them on visits.

Spoons are consistantly raising money to continue supporting neonatal familes, to include breastpumps for each mum, sibling support, therapy to recover from trauma (both parents and children). Also baby massage to help babies with their development post discharge and a place unique for parents of preemies to socialise. In September, Spoons is locating to local children centres for a place for families to meet, talk and seek support and continue our journeys as our babies grow. Weaning sessions, first aid and much more!!!

We discovered Spoons was set up by parents who had themselves had experianced neonatal care for their own prem babies. They volunteer on both Royal Oldham and North Manchester Hospitals giving help, advise and a listening ear. You do not feel so alone.

Neonatal is the most isolating and frightening place to be, so much is unknown. No day is the same.To see a friendly face, to know they have been where you are is so reassuring. Having a facebook page to connect to other parents on the unit has built us a small, supportive network to go to.

Staff and Spoons do so much fundraising to help parents, families and babies on the unit, I would love to help give back a little something for all the love, kindness and care we have recieved in the last 12 months and they continue to do so.

So on 4th October at 9pm, I will be going up to the top of 'The Big One' - rain, wind or....hopefully much milder weather to raise money!!!!!!! So please donate to keep this fantastic charity giving amazing support.....
