Story

As many viewing this page will know, Satpal Singh Ubhi passed away on Tuesday 7th September 2021 at Birmingham Queen Elizabeth Hospital (QE).

The hospital holds a special place in our hearts, having held a critical and invaluable role in Satpal's care. This is true not only in the lead-up to his death but also a few years earlier when he became an organ donor.
As such, we would like to ask you to join us in supporting the hospital by donating to The Win Sabapathy Foundation, the QE's kidney research facility.

Satpal's wife, Kaldip Kaur Ubhi, has suffered with kidney issues all her adult life. In 2016 she was placed on a waiting list for a kidney transplant, which proved unfruitful. Determined to find a solution for Kaldip, the renal unit at The QE worked hard to support Kaldip, exploring all options. Their solution involved organ donation across three couples. Following a year on the list, matches were found with two other couples willing to be involved in the exchanges. Satpal did not hesitate to support Kaldip and selflessly agreed to exchange his kidney for a matching kidney for his beloved wife. The support, encouragement and positivity radiated from the doctors and the nurses through the whole process was incredible. At every step of both Satpal and Kaldip's journey they felt safe, reassured and cared for beyond that which some may expect from the NHS. The medical team's success was simply evidenced by Satpal's swift 24 hour recovery, allowing him to be by Kaldip's side to see her through her recovery.

A few years down the line, into 2021, Satpal was admitted into the QE again, needing support with his breathing. It was by shear determination and relentless pursuit of Satpal's recovery that the staff at the QE's Intensive Care Unit bought Satpal back to the family from a cardiac arrest. Unfortunately this happened for a second time. There is no doubt whatsoever that the staff worked tirelessly to keep Satpal with us. Providing medical care was of course the main focus of the doctors and nurses but the emotional support they provided the family surpassed our expectations. The team in intensive care unit B ensured Satpal was as comfortable as he could be. They also granted his closest family the gift of being able to be at his bedside during his final hours and at his passing; given the current restrictions, this was a privilege and appreciated more than words can express.

In life, Satpal shared the journey with Kaldip in her resolve to care for herself and proactively manage her kidney illness. It's without surprise therefore that the work of The Win Sabapathy Foundation was close to Satpal's heart.

Any donation you make will contribute to the Foundation's world class research, improving the outcomes of donors and receivers of kidney transplants; help us to honor Satpal's memory by supporting their work.

Thank-you.
