The Challenge:

Players, members and associates of SEA VIEW RFC (officially the youngest rugby club in Wales) are raising money for 2 charities that are close to our hearts: The Welsh Guards Afghanistan Appeal and Help for Heroes.

Starting on Sunday 25th July and ending on Sunday 1st August 2010 we will be walking from the sandy beaches of Barry Island to the misty heights of mount Snowdon. This will involve approximately 150 miles of heel-blistering, knee-twisting, back-aching effort, covering around 29 miles a day and then climbing one of Wales' most famous landmarks!

Full Walk Participants ONLY: We will be LEAVING our clubhouse at 08:00 on Sunday 25th July. Please be there for 07:45 at the latest so we can ensure all participants and equipment is present.

The members who are unable to have a full week off work will be meeting us in Snowdonia on Friday 30th July and completing the climb on Saturday 31st July, thus allowing the entire club to be a part of the challenge.

Snowdon Climbers ONLY: The minibus will be leaving Barry at 18:00 on Friday 30th July and the entire party (full walkers and 'weekenders') will be leaving Snowdon around 12:00 on Sunday 1st August.

About the charity

Welsh Guards Appeal

The Welsh Guards have recently returned from a successful tour of Helmand Province in Afghanistan. Throughout the summer they relentlessly took the fight to the Taliban and conducted over 3242 combat patrols and sustained no less than 1463 attacks from the enemy. These successes were not without some considerable cost including the deaths of 7 soldiers, including the Commanding Officer, Lieutenant Colonel Rupert Thorneloe, the highest ranking officer killed in action since the Falkland’s War. In addition, a considerable number of soldiers have been in hospital and are now in rehabilitation centres. Furthermore, we must expect that more will, in the longer term, be mentally invalided by their experiences. The next 10 years promise to make extraordinary demands on the Regiment, serving Welsh Guardsmen, their partners and families and those members of the Regiment who have left through disability or work-related illness. The Welsh Guards Afghanistan Appeal is designed to support, alleviate and improve the prospects of those consequently in need. •Support the families and dependants of those killed in action by responding promptly to problems of bereavement and hardship. •Support those wounded on operations, particularly those who have had to leave the Army, to assist in finding them new employment and to help them become active family and community members. •Support the families and dependants of those seriously wounded or injured in prolonged recovery situations.
