Story

I am doing this sponsored Skydive on Saturday 4th September to try and raise money for the Children’s Renal Ward at St James Hospital in .

My 2 sons - Jack 6yrs old & Jorge 2 yrs old both go to this hospital on regular occassions as they have Cystinuria - a condition where they get Kidney Stones which could damage there Kidneys if they keep getting them and may end up needing dialysis. This is something that they will suffer with for the rest of there lives and are on permanent medication 3 times a day to try and help reduce it and regular check-ups/scans every 3 months but the medication has bad side effects which could result in other types of stones forming.

We first found out that Jack got Kidney stones when he was 18 months old when he as admitted to hospital and had to undergo 4 operations in 2 months to remove the 3 stones as they were too big to remove by keyhole surgery and one was blocking his ureter so he had to have a stent put in so it didn't narrow and cause a blockage. We found out Jorge had the same condition when he was 2 wks old when he was admitted to hospital with water infections so they tested him for it - he is also on antibiotics to try help prevent infections. Their last scans have shown that they now both have Kidney Stones.

I am wanting to raise the money to try and help make a difference to the children’s stay in hospital, as the ward was quite run down with plain white walls (that just looked more like an adult ward) and hardly any toys for them to play with so I want to try and make it a brighter more child friendly place to make the children’s stay in hospital as less traumatic and scary for them as possible. As it can be quite a distressing time for young children when they are ill and having to stay in a strange environment so it will hopefully help to distract them a bit and make it a bit more homely for them.

Cystinuria is an inherited defect metabolic disorder characterized by the abnormal movement in the intestines and kidneys that prevents the body’s retention of certain amino acids from leaving the body. As a result excessive amounts of undissolved cystine in the urine cause the formation of solid crystals which form hard rock cystine stones in the kidney, bladder, and/or ureter.

A friend of mine Abigail (www.justgiving.com/Abigail-Tyer) is also doing this - so if anyone else would also like to join us or try and help us raise money please let us know.

Many Thanks
