We Did It !!!

It was HOT, it was TOUGH. It almost broke some of us, but we ALL made it home! When I have recovered and my mind is functioning, I'll write some more. Thank you so much to you all, your generosity kept us focused and we had many laughs along the way!

The Route

The route was opened in 1994 running from Whitehaven on the west coast of Cumbria to the North East coast Tynemouth,

The C2C starts in the former coal mining and industrial lands of West Cumbria, travels through the stunning scenery of the northern Lake District and heads into Keswick before passing through Penrith and the Eden Valley with its lush valleys and sandstone villages. It then starts the climb up to Hartside and onto the unspoilt Northern Pennines - the roof of England.

There then follows an undulating ride as the C2C meanders through old lead mining villages, such as Nenthead and Rookhope, and down into the Durham Dales before entering the old steel town of Consett.

From here it's an enjoyable ride through one of Britain's old industrial heartlands to the North Sea at Tynemouth

The route is made up of approximately....

Main Roads - mainly short sections through urban areas - 4%

Minor Roads - quiet, country roads - 50%

Cyclepaths/Off Road - disused railway lines etc - 46%

We are a team of seven Mums, from Gosforth, Newcastle. We are cycling the Coast to Coast in May, and hope to raise some money for a local charity, the North of England Children's Cancer Research fund. With 20 children between us, we have all, in some way, been touched by the work they do.

We are called Seven Short Stories............

* Annabelle : My previous job was Sister of a Plastics & Burns Reconstructive Theatre, where dealing with cancer on a daily basis made it almost common place. I am now a full time mum to four boys, and entirely detached from the health service. Last year my friend's 3 year old son Tom was diagnosed with a Wilms tumour on his left kidney. Since then he has undergone major surgery, radiotherapy and 8 months of chemotherapy. He has been such a brave little boy throughout his treatment and has managed to go to nursery school nearly everyday.  I am cycling the C2C, and would love your support, so we can help the NECCR fund, who help so many amazing children, like Tom, and their wonderful families.   Thank you x

* Hilary : I'm a mum of four too, and a (very!) part time teacher of French. I am really looking forward to doing the C2C and supporting such a worthwhile charity at the same time.   Hilary x

Louisa : Not sure my hamstrings are going to last this one - really looking forward to those hills! Raising money for NECCR means so much to me, my first child died of brain cancer 11 years ago and supporting NECCR is a commitment my family has made over the past years. I know we'll cycle hard and make you proud, just hoping Annabelle is going to share her hair straighteners.    Louisa x

Liz : Mum of two, age 10 and 7. This is a great charity, my son was just 3 when he was diagnosed with Leukaemia, and coped with three and a half years of chemotherapy.  We have been lucky because at the age of 6 and a half he was given the all clear.  I am really looking forward to the challenge, a little worried about lack of luggage space and very much hoping my dressing gown will fit in!   Liz x

* Dee : I have 3 young kids and work part-time as a GP. Over the years I have met a number of amazingly courageous young children and their families dealing with cancer. I whole-heartedly support NECCR and anything we can do to help them improve treatments and lesson the suffering has to be immensely worthwhile. So...... 7 of us fit young mums (!!) are going to jump on our bikes and pedal up hill and down dale for 3 long days to raise some money for this excellent cause - please donate whatever you can, every little helps.  Thank you x

* Jo : I am a mum of two who works from home, and I am delighted that my FIRST long distance cycle is going to help raise money for such brave children like Tom. I am excited about the challenge ahead and hope that my friends will donate a little something to this very worthy cause, thank you very much xx

Cycling is a lot of fun,  and is very sore on your bum!

but we pedal through the pain,  the c2c is our aim.

                                                                         Cash for NECCR our gain!

Claire : I have 3 young girls and our whole family loves cycling. Having never attempted an adventure like this before, I'm proud to be helping to raise money for such a worthwhile charity. Hopefully the sun will shine and help us up the hills and back home, to Tyneside, maybe a few pounds lighter on the bikes but heavier for NECCR.  Thank you x
