Story

Shadows And Stones Warhammer Fantasy Tournament

Hi folks its Warren just to announce that the Phoenix Gaming Club in Rushden proudly presents Shadows and Stones WFB Tournament on the 3rd October 2015. This is will be a charity event for Help for Heroes but more on how you can make this happen a little later. This is a singles event and as such the places are limited here at the Scout Hall to 24 players. After much talk it has been felt that we should just stick to 8th edition rules although ninth will be out soon. People have remarked that 9th may cause changes to what we would like to do.

This will be done in an almost campaign style (all centred on the Ogham Stones of Albion) but using the Swiss Style for the tournament itself.  There will be 12 armies of Light and 12 Armies of Chaos. Neutral armies will be added to each side alternatively on point, the first one being added to Armies of Light.

Each army side will be drawn against the best of their opposition for rounds two and three. So there will be prizes for the top three awards for light armies and chaos armies (six in all). There will be an award for the best-painted army and one for best sports. There will also be a consolation award for the two lowest scorers.

So what’s all this charity stuff and how can I get involved? Ok we are not asking all contestants to run 10K and get sponsors for that in between rounds 1 and 2. What we are asking is for people to be generous towards a good cause. We are kindly asking for people to please pledge a unit of no more than 20 for infantry, or 10 for cavalry, or 4 for Monstrous Infantry or 3 for monstrous cavalry. Characters would also be acceptable, as would monsters. For rounds 2 and 3 you have the chance to bid for a mercenary unit, which you will get to keep (forever) and play in those rounds. All of the proceeds from this auction will go towards the charity. Now so far we have about five mercenary units already pledged to be painted up and ready to go with a movement tray – one person has already pledged two.. However once done, you have to accept that they will go to the new homes and army cases of those kind enough to have successfully bid on them.

So how do I get this done? Firstly you may just choose perhaps one of the old Dogs of War characters or/ and their units, which is quite an easy option. They don’t have to be the actual models – a unit of Macedonian pikemen could suffice for the Alcantini fellowship with their rules straight out of the book. However, to get more creative you may make up your unique unit, which must come with it’s own set of rules. These can be put onto a word file or pdf. I have done one example already.

I would need to have the pdfs by September (so that I can see that they are not a broken set of WAAC rules for the unit) and the painted models sent to me two weeks before the tournament date itself.  Try and make their rules a little amusing with a tiny bit of self-corrupted danger that they could inflict on themselves. Perhaps a unit of mercenary ogre leadbelchers that love a drink when they fire … A unit of questing knights lead by a paladin that have a specific duty (so many Monty Pythonesque things could be added here).

As soon as I have received the units and their rules I will post them up. Now people can make a secret bid to me via my email, which I shall share with one other trusted person and no one else. The blind bidding would start the week before the tournament would end the night before the tournament on the 1st October 2015 at midnight. This gives me a day to collate the winning bids into envelopes and I will print off the bidding email sent. You can make as many bids as you like. However I would prefer if the hobbyist or creator of the mercenary unit gave what they called a fair starting price so we had something to go on. No money or cash or Paypal transactions on these units would actually occur before the tournament. When the time comes later this year for the auction please do not blind bid without intent.

Between rounds 1 and 2 there will be a 15-minute break and then a half an hour auction sale. I will take the secret bids out to reveal the highest bid. If no bids have gone then it is opened up to the room with the starting bid. Any unsold units will be put towards a raffle at the end to raise more money.  I will also try and secure some sponsorship to add to the raffle prizes.

Woah hang on – you’re asking me to send models to you??  Yeah ok I see how this would sound to some of you and to be honest I could think the same. However a lot of you know me from tournaments and from hosting the Rushden Rumble every year – to know that I am a very trustworthy individual and your models will be looked after for the event. I have registered with the Help for Heroes charity for this. As a secondary school teacher the last thing I would really want is a criminal record and as a player / T.O. to be ostracised by the gaming community, therefore putting the Rushden Rumble at risk.

I will also be doing a few black out cards on the day to raise some more money. As for the money it would be preferable for you to bring your cash to the tournament or your phones with Paypal on them! Would be pointless otherwise.

The rules for the tournament itself (which has seemed to taken a back seat) will be posted up in the next few weeks.

To give you an idea of forces needed.

Scenario 1 – 1200pts lead by a hero (no Lords in this one)

Scenario 2 – 2000pts plus 500pts of monsters (2 binding spells) and either a free truthsayer or a dark emissary depending on your chosen army.

Scenario 3 – 2400pts plus 500pts of monsters (2 binding spells) and either a free truthsayer or a dark emissary depending on your chosen army.

Remember your mercenary units can be used in round 2 however if they are wiped out they cannot be used in round 3 – save for one specific unit I have up my sleeve!

hopefully you can all help towards this worthwhile cause.
We are looking to raise a minimum of a £100 but I reckon we could get even more. If anyone wishes to donate outside of the boundaries of the Tournament auction please do so on this page.
Remember those guys of the armed forces have been through a lot to ensure that you are safe.
