THIS IS WHAT ITS ALL ABOUT: Centrepoint’s Youth Homelessness Index (2004), researched by , estimates there are at least 50,000 homeless young people in each year. This is about 1 in 60 of all 15-19 year-olds in ! Centrepoint is the national charity that supports and campaigns for homeless young people. They offer safe accommodation; from emergency night shelters through to supported independent flats and specialist mother and baby services. They help young people address the issues that led them to become homeless and offer the chance to turn things around with counselling, accredited education programmes, life skills courses such as cooking and budgeting, and opportunities to work. SO WHERE DOES THE MONEY GO? · £10 helps provide a bed in an emergency hostel for a night. · £50 can buy hot meals for a homeless young person for one week. · £85 could buy pots and pans for a self-catering Centrepoint flat, preparing a young person for independent living. LITTLE THINGS CAN HAVE A BIG IMPACT… When I started at AOL back in May, I signed up to help out for a day painting the bedrooms in on of the ‘transition’ homes – a stop gap for youngsters as young as 15 before they are permanently re-homed. Just seeing the look on their faces as they came home from school to see their rooms re-done was enough to make me realise that this charity is making a real difference to their lives, and in the day I had been there I felt I had for a fleeting moment been part of that. It was a humbling experience. Give as little or as much as you like, any amount is good enough, so please don’t be shy Thanks, thanks and thanks again guys & gals. Soph.x P.S.
