About me:

* PLEASE NOTE* - Unfortunately, I have badly broken my leg in early September (not in training!) and in a frame for 4 months. But I am determined to do this challenge at a later date. Your support is still very much appreciated *

My name is Stephen Collins and I live in Huddersfield with my wife Sally. I've worked in retail for many years but recently had to step back due to my health. Now I'm looking to develop a career in disability advocacy and motivational speaking.

When Emma's mum, Christine put out an appeal for people to be a 'MITO HERO' - and to put some energy into mito awareness and research - I immediately wanted to do something. I have my own lovely daughter Rose who's a similar age to Emma and was so desperately sorry when Emma died from this terrible illness for which we need to find treatments and a cure.

The Challenge:

Usually I need a walking frame to help me to keep my balance. However, my challenge will be to walk 50 steps without it. This is something that I have never even tried before … but I am determined to achieve it if I possibly can.

I asked Christine to film me walking with my frame - and a few steps without it so that you can see the challenge I face. Please check the video out here: http://youtu.be/hDFZq9itTXk

The planned date is Saturday 14th September 2019 to coincide with the launch of Global Mitochondrial Disease Awareness Week. We're currently looking for a good public venue with lots of footfall where I can complete the challenge and perhaps get even more publicity and more funds donated in the day. Watch this space!

My goal is to raise as much awareness and publicity as I can and to raise a minimum of £10 a step … that at least £500 for mito research. Even more would be amazing!

If you haven't already, please also watch Emma's video to see just how important this cause is for so many - and sponsor me as much as you possibly can.

Thank you!

Stephen :)

Our missions are run by families affected by mitochondrial disease, mito for short. MILLIONS in the UK have illnesses which also involve mitochondrial damage - diabetes, MS, stroke, some cancers & many more. More research into mitochondrial disease could help so many, not just those with mito.
