The Stephensons’ 12-hour-shift cycle · 2 May 2020

Children North East exists because growing up can be hard. We create life-changing differences for babies, children and young people in their families, schools and communities. We offer support at those times when a little help can make a big difference for a child and its future.

Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

Will and Sophie will be cycling for 12 hours on 2nd May 2020 - the length of a standard NHS ward shift. They will be cycling on a road bike attached to a turbo trainer set at a medium heat and will each take turns to do an hour on the bike. Six hours on the turbo roughly equates to 100-120miles (Will would like to clarify that this is based on Sophie’s pace!)  Whoever is off the bike will have a very restful time chasing after their incredibly energetic 3 year old and 1 year old! Previously avid road cyclists, it should be noted that Will and Sophie have barely been near a road bike since becoming parents over three years ago and will DEFINITELY find the bike ride, along with fitting into their old Lycra, a challenge!

We wanted to help a local charity which provides support to vulnerable families and Children North East provides invaluable support. The impact of Covid 19, from finances to mental health and well-being to instances of domestic violence, makes their work even more vital. Children North East began in 1891 providing a "hand up, not a hand out" to poor children living in Newcastle and Gateshead, now every year they help thousands of children and young people through all stages of their lives.  That support starts even before a baby is born, for example, with the Bumps and Buddies scheme for vulnerable mothers to be.
