Story

26/3/2010

Tangye is now safe in quarrantine kennels in the UK. He will stay there for 6 months and then a new home will be found for him. We are all so delighted he has finally arrived here safe and sound. Many thanks go to all the people who have helped us get him here, and especially to Nowzad, the charity run by Pen Farthing, without who's help we would not have managed. Thanks too must go to the soldiers themselves for caring enough in the first place to start the campaign to bring Tangye home.

The money raised on this page will now be spent to pay for all Tangyes flight costs to the UK and for his stay in the quarrantine kennels. He will also be having a thorough vet health check during his stay. Any money left over will be donated to Nowzad so that they can continue to help dogs such as Tangye. http://www.nowzaddogs.co.uk/

UPDATE: This appeal has now achieved enough funds to pay for Tangyes transport and quarrantine costs and is temporarily closed so PLEASE DO NOT MAKE ANY MORE DONATIONS ON THIS PAGE. We now have to sit quiet and wait for any news of Tangye being moved. For security reasons we will not know when, or even if, he will be moved so please keep an eye on his facebook page for all up to date news.

All money raised on this page will be used soley for Tangye and will be used to pay for his transport to the UK and his quarrantine costs once he gets here. As soon as he reaches the UK we will know exactly what those costs will be and if there is any shortfall we will open this page again.

Thank you all so much for your generosity. I am sure Tangye would say thank you if only he could.

Should you still wish to make any donations please consider sending money to NOWZAD dogs who can and will continue to help other dogs in war torn areas.

Their web site and how to donate is on this link  http://www.nowzaddogs.co.uk/

Taken from BBC News Website

British soldiers in Afghanistan have begun a campaign to save a dog which has been patrolling alongside them.
Tangye the black Labrador has survived gun battles and explosions but troops fear he could end up being killed.
With the increased risk from improvised explosive devices (IEDs), the men of C Company, 3rd Battalion The Rifles, want to find Tangye a home in the UK.
L/Cpl Brent Meheux, from Exeter, said the dog was a "morale booster", but it was too dangerous for him to continue.

It would mean an awful lot to the lads to know he was safe
L/Cpl Brent Meheux
Tangye was named after a village on Helmand river opposite the forward operating base at Kajaki.
He has been living at the base since a British soldier bought him as a puppy from a dam worker about five years ago.
L/Cpl Meheux, a 44-year-old Territorial Army soldier, said Tangye has done more patrols than most soldiers and he should be retired.
"When the lads are under contact he will run up and down the line barking and wagging his tail," he said.
"It's as if he is shouting encouragement - he loves it.

Tangye is described by the soldiers of C company as "fearless under fire"
"But we had to stop him coming out on patrol about a week ago. The IED threat is just too high. It's gone through the roof."
He said the dog was fearless under fire, and would even be the first to jump through if soldiers exploded a hole in a compound wall as they cleared a village of insurgents.
"The Taliban probably know about him and think he is a sniffer dog. I'm sure they would want to make him a target," L/Cpl Meheux said.
"It would mean an awful lot to the lads to know he was safe.
"He has been such a morale-booster for the lads, but he can't do what he loves doing over here any more - it's too dangerous.
"We want someone to help us get him back to a safe home in the UK."
