Story
Geoff (our husband, dad & brother) was diagnosed with cancer over 2 years ago and fought a long hard battle with the disease, defying everything he was told! He was determined not to give up but unfortunately, we lost him on 1st Feb 2010 peacefully at the Marie Curie hospice in Newcastle.
He was admitted on the 13th Jan for a short stay that turned out to be a little longer. We had all never experienced a hospice environment before, and we have to admit were very apprehensive intially. Once we arrived it was a total different story, it was so peaceful with huge rooms that had double doors overlooking the birds feeding in the gardens. The nurses and doctors were truly kind and caring, knowing exactly what to give to dad to help him make him feel comfortable and always taking the time to ensure we, as a family, were ok and supported.
During his last few weeks team Watson cramped into his room each day celebrating Christmas, malteser blowing competitions, friday nights in with beer, homework parties and telling stories of dad in his mischevious years, all accompnied by a glass of wine each night! The staff did nothing but support us and laughed at our various antics. Without the care and support of the nurses and doctors at Marie Curie to allow us to do this and make dad as comfortable as possible, we would never have been able to look back at his last few weeks and smile. They truly are angels and we cant thank them enough!
The hospices are run off sponsership and donations and during Dad's stay it cost the hospice £7600 to look after him. So in keeping with our mischeivous antics being Watson's, we have now set ourselves a challenge to raise over £8000 in support for Marie Curie and will be partaking in numerous fundraising events over the next year including:
Marie Curie Swimathon 5k- April 18th- Dad's birthday week
Walk 10k- August 16th-18th
Great North Run- Sept 19th
Loch Ness Marathon- Oct 3rd
Zip Wiring the Tyne- Oct 31st
Watson Music Concerts- ongoing
So please help us raise the target and dig deep by donating online!!! Plllllllllllllllllllllleeeeeeeeeeeeeaaaaaaaassssssseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! Thanks for you support from family Watson!!!
