Story

Hello from Linda, Theresa & Maureen

Welcome to our 💜 374 in 30 💜 Challenge

On the 5 October 2019 we will each embark on the challenge of cycling 374 miles over 30 days using turbo trainers. We are doing this to raise funds for the Scottish Transplant Unit where Theresa underwent a liver transplant in Dec 2017.

💜 374 is the number of miles Theresa's donor liver travelled from London to the Scottish Transplant Unit in Edinburgh

💜 30 is the number of days she spent in hospital following her transplant.

The first day of cycling will take place in Hyde Park, London to mark the launch and the last day of cycling will take place on Edinburgh cycle routes, finishing at the Transplant Unit. The days in between will be done in our own locations on turbo trainers.

The money raised through your donations will be given directly to the Scottish Transplant Unit, through the Edinburgh & Lothians Health Foundation, and will help to support families of organ recipients in the days after the transplant. The Scottish Transplant Unit serves the whole of Scotland and many families face financial difficulties in covering the immense costs for travel and accommodation at a time when they are under great emotional stress.

Theresa's Story 💜 At 2am on 27 December 2017 I received a call to say that a donor liver was on its way from London to the Scottish Transplant Unit in Edinburgh and that, all going well, it was to be my new liver.

9 hours later I went to theatre and 11 hrs after that I started my journey back to health. The transplant has transformed my life and there are so many people to who I owe so much: the donor and her family for their wonderful selfless gift; my family & friends for getting me through the times before, during & after my transplant and the amazing team at the Transplant Unit for their skill, determination and care.

It has taken me a long time to rebuild my fitness. Despite a few hiccups along the way I now feel able to undertake this challenge to raise money to support the work of the Scottish Transplant Unit. I know it won’t be easy but so many people have battled through my various challenges with me and it is the least I can do.

Maureen’s Story 💜 I am Theresa's sister-in-law and am feeling privileged to be joining Theresa in this challenge. She is an inspiration to our family.  Her quiet determination and absolute commitment to anything she does will mean that this task will be carefully thought through and completed on time in a cheery positive way.

I am eager to improve my own fitness and enjoy a challenge, though cycling everyday for 30 days will stretch me! Reflecting on Theresa’s health journey has made me determined to be successful and I’m very much looking forward to getting going. I’m excited about cycling in Hyde Park, London and to the final cycle in Edinburgh, the bit in between will require lots of enthusiasm and effort! I’m ready to get started.

Linda’s Story 💜 I too am Theresa's sister-in-law and am feeling privileged to be part of this journey to support Theresa - she is an amazing  women who over the last 12 years or so has shown real determination and tenacity to get through the various stages of her battle with health. In the recent months Theresa’s plight has really made me think about my own health. I am more aware of the need to make time for myself and to give my body and mind the attention they deserve, thus ensuring I am around for my husband & son to enjoy life to the fullest everyday. Cycling daily, and fitting this in with the madness of my work, will be a real challenge but I am going to give it my best shot for Theresa and the Transplant Unit.

Thanks for listening to our stories 💜💕💜
