Story
On 23 May I will be participating in the biggest physical challenge of my life, 100km non-stop from London to Brighton. My optimistic target is to complete it within 24 hours and arrive in Bighton around 9am on Sunday morning.
I'm doing this is to raise money for the Sickle Cell Society. Some of you may never have heard of Sickle Cell. This means you don't pay attention because I go on about it all all the time. Sickle cell anaemia is an inherited blood disorder primarily affecting people of West African origin and that causes red blood cell to become sickle shaped. It can cause debilitating pain for sufferers and significantly reduce life expectancy. Sickle cell trait is the heritable trait for sickle cell and those with the trait can find that under certain, rare, conditions, their red blood cells also start to sickle. I've known that I have sickle cell trait all my life and although it has affected me little it has meant that I've always been very aware of the difficulties faced by those with full blown sickle cell anaemia.
The Sickle Cell Society does valuable work to help those with sickle cell by providing care to people battling the condition and support for their families.
Your support will be greatly appreciated.
