Story

Two years ago to the day on May 9th 2012 I got the phone call we all dread from our kids' school.

My 10 year old twin son had fallen from a height, head first onto a concrete floor.

Josh broke clean through his skull and had sustained several brain haemorrhages. He was rushed to A&E at the Whittington Hospital in Highgate, where a flurry of activity began to save his life. He was in and out of consciousness and totally incoherent. It was terrifying.

Every doctor and nurse in A&E was around his bed and with every minute that passed more were arriving from different units of the hospital. After his scans were examined by the neurological surgeons at Great
Ormond Street Hospital (GOSH) they sent a special ambulance (with a full operating theatre inside) to move him to their Neurological Unit.

Over the following 72 hours Josh's brain continued to swell but with nowhere to go, blindness ensued. I'm told that the pain of a brain swelling is the worst a human can endure.

The amazing doctors and nurses at GOSH helped Josh in those days in ways we will never ever forget. We were also witness to the amazing work they were doing for all the other children who came in and out of our ward daily.

One week after arriving we got to take Josh home in a wheel chair to begin to convalesce. We were told his recovery would take at least two years.
Josh is slight but he's very strong, determined and very brave. He has made an amazing recovery, he's restarted full time school within 4 months and is on top of his school work at Highgate. He is a fabulous athlete and
excels at skiing and table tennis. I am so very proud to be his father.

He has one main concern about his time at GOSH - despite having no memory of all but his last day there - he wants to give back to thank them for saving his life.

Despite a life lived quite happily without trainers, Josh now has me running with him! Together with friends and family (all are welcome to join) we are going to run 10km on Saturday 10th May and follow his steps
of that eventful week (Josh will actually run 20km).   Our route takes us from our home in Highgate to Highgate School, The Whittington A&E and then on to Great Ormond Street. The last leg will take us over 10km and at that point some of us will drive home!

Josh's determination and courage won't stop there as he is insisting on running home completing approximately a 1/2 marathon.

I know you all support many good causes and many of you support GOSH already. Josh and I would be so grateful if you could help him to give something meaningful back to this amazing hospital.

Thanks for your help and your time.

Tim and Josh.
