Story
Our North Pole expedition will start on 30th March when we fly via Oslo to Longyearbyen in Spitsbergen. We will spend a night at base camp after which a Russian Antonov 74 will take us to the Barneo Ice Base on the Arctic Ocean, situated at 89° North. We will trek to the geographic North Pole at 90° North, 'the Last Degree'. Depending on weather and ice conditions we will ski 15 - 20 kilometers per day and our goal is to reach the top of the world on 9th April!
Our Last Degree expedition aims to raise funds to finance a weather station in aid of the WWF Arctic Programme. It will measure temperature, air pressure and ice drift on the North Pole. This unique instrument will be tailor made and deployed next year in a region from which little data is available. It will provide a unique set of data that helps scientists better understand the dynamics and decline of Arctic sea ice. After deployment, the weather station “Panda 2” can be tracked for several months until it's swept away on the edge of the sea ice.
This programme is unique in the sense that only on very few occasions have scientists had access to live data from the North Pole. The expediton is unique for us too as we've never pulled 30 kilo sleds at -40°C for 7 days!!
Please support our efforts by donating to the WWF Arctic Programme. Your contribution is greatly appreciated, many thanks in advance!
Kind regards,
Tjalling
