Story

Thanks for taking the time to visit our JustGiving page.

This page and fundraising effort is in memory of Alex Tostevin, who suddenly passed away on 18 March 2018, aged 28.

Alex grew up in Guernsey in the Channel Islands and went to the Guernsey Grammar School, where all of us participating in this fundraising got to know him and become great friends.

Upon leaving the Guernsey Grammar School, Alex joined the Royal Marines in which he served for the majority of his adult life until his sudden passing away.

During Alex’s time in the military, he underwent multiple deployments including a deployment to Afghanistan in 2010. It was while on active duty in Sangin province in July 2010, that Alex was shot in the head, with the bullet skirting the inside of his helmet and causing him to fall to the floor. Alex dismissed the wound as a scratch and promptly returned fire, allowing two of his comrades to return to safety. Alex received a Mention in Dispatches for his outstanding bravery and professionalism.

Alex lived life to the full and considering his bravery and character, his passing away came as a huge shock to all of us. While we cannot bring Alex back, we now wish to pay tribute to Alex and promote the excellent work and professionalism of the UK’s armed forces and ensure that those serving our country and their families receive additional support during ill health, following injury or death. We have therefore decided to raise money in aid of the Royal Marines Charity and SBSA. All money raised will go towards supporting these charities in their efforts to provide support to service members and their families and friends.

We will be raising money by participating in a 30-mile hike across Dartmoor, in the South West UK, in September 2018. Dartmoor is frequently used by the British military, including the Royal Marines, for training and is therefore somewhere that we know Alex spent a significant amount of time during his career. Alex’s friends that will be participating are Jamie Lucas, Ben Le Poidevin, James Chapple, Joe Cowens, Laurence Makins and Giorgio Venosa. If any of Alex’s friends wish to participate or provide support, please don’t hesitate to get in touch with us.

We would be most grateful for any donation and would also ask that you help us promote our cause by sharing the link to this page. Many thanks again for visiting this page and any donations made. Your support is greatly appreciated.
