We work alongside young people in Kenya to build rewarding, poverty-free, futures

Story

Hi friends,

This month I'll be walking and horse riding 50 miles for Raising Futures Kenya, to support young people with skills training and personal wellbeing support so they can build safe, secure futures, free from poverty. I've worked for Raising Futures for over three years now and seen the impact of our flagship programme, Seed of Hope, with my own eyes when I visited in 2018. 50 miles is the distance between the Seed of Hope training centre in the informal settlement (slum community) in Nairobi, and the rural centre in Kariti, Kenya.

I'm planning to cover the 50 miles by walking the school run with Josie and clocking up some miles on horseback at my weekly riding lessons - I promise it's not a cop out, I'll be making sure my teacher puts me through my paces each week so I earn your donations ;)

This September my 4 year old starts school -it is an acute reminder of the inequality in education access around the world. Since the pandemic started, youth unemployment has doubled in Kenya, with 1.5 million young people under 25 in Kenya now out of school or work.

Young girls in particular, are at high risk of exploitation including rape, child marriage and teenage pregnancy. They’re also more likely to be coerced into drugs and crime.

‘With no other options for education or work, I turned to sex work to put a roof over my head. As a street girl, I was harassed and abused by the big boys and I became pregnant. I thought about committing suicide as I felt like this life has no meaning and my child’s life would be even more tragic than mine.’ – Seed of Hope student

£132 will pay for a 6 month training course for a young person aged 14-25 in Kenya to get the skills and experience they need to start their own small business, or secure a job. Earning enough to live free from poverty. All young people deserve an opportunity to build a happy, secure, life. Anything you can donate will help this happen.

Thank you!
