Story

Wei's Challenge - Hong Hong Marathon, to raise money for Sam Beare Hospice

Wei's Update (08 March 2010):

I have (successfully) completed the Hong Kong Half marathon on 28 February 2010, suffered badly, mentally and physically, during and after the event.

I arrived in Hong Kong on Saturday, 27 Feb 2010, at 18.30.  Slept for a few hours, wake up at 04.00 in preparation for the event to start at 06.00 (22.00 UK time).

The temperature was 25C and rising, 90% humidity, cloudy and dark.

I started off well, keeping to a scheduled pace of 9.5 mins per mile.  However, things started going wrong at 10km, where my legs wanted to carry on, but the lungs had inadequate oxygen.  I was suffering, searching for air and energy for the next 10km.  With 1 km to go, I found a small burst of will power to take me past the finish line.

My time was poor, made it in 3 hours, but i did finish.

I was not in good shape at the finish, felt dehyrated, exhausted, dizzy and sick.  Needed medical assistance, my blood pressure was low (75/50).  They wanted to put me on a drip and hospital, but i asked them to give me a chance to rest and recover.  Luckily, I did.  I was so sleepy, managed to get home, and slept for 24 hours.

Not sure if i will do it again, if so, will stick with the UK (conditions i know).

Thank you to everyone for all your well wishes, continuous support and your generous sponsorship.  I did this for the cause.

Take care,

Wei

I have decided to do the Hong Kong Half Marathon on 28 February 2010, to raise money for my selected charity, Sam Beare Hospice.

Sam Beare Hospice is a very special charity to me, as they help and provide support to people with terminal illnesses such as cancer.  They also provide back up and mental strength to the families to overcome difficult decisions and situations.

Sam Beare also have a voluntary group that help young children who have lost someone very close to them.  These can be weekend play groups or a site seeing activity to a model railway or a park.  Presently, the funds are at extremely low levels, to sustain the continuity of this young people's group.

I am looking for your support to help the Hospice to raise additional funds to give an opportunity for these kids to have some happy times, and for them to group and see they are not alone.

I look forward to your support, and thank you for reading this message.

Take care all,

Wei
