I am an events organiser. With the help of friends, we put together "Miss Mo Presents ..." live performance which showcase original poetry, spoken word, comedy, theatre, music, soundscapes, film & urban art. "Miss Mo Presents ..." is a conduit for both literary & artistic heavyweights, as well as rising talent. The events help to provide a platform for unheard voices. In our struggle for day to day survival I believe it is vital to have a safe and encouraging environment for voices that otherwise might be unheard. Creativity and a supportive forum in which to express these ideas and images play a crucial part in shaping and promoting our overall Wellbeing.

I've chosen to raise money for Mosaic because I suffer from a chronic mental health disease. I consider myself to be a well-presented, articulate person who tends to fall into the gap between acute NHS mental health services and the pit of potential doom.

Without wishing to sound dramatic, when I am assessed over the phone (eg. the 24/7 Mental Health Crisis Line/GP/Secondary & Primary Health provision - because I have excellent personal hygiene and look & sound well to the eyes of the outside world, people naturally assume I'm an upstanding, smart and able human being. WRONG. Mental Health is an INVISIBLE issue. Even good, long-term friends of mine assume that I am well, and functioning, when I am actually having a crisis, or at my lowest and darkest ebb, and feeling BROKEN.

Mosaic Clubhouse provide a self-referral system for anyone who is a resident of Lambeth, though some parts have to be completed by a GP or mental health care coordinator. It provides a multitude of FREE activities, social events, courses, training, and an excellent back to work programme,  and also an Evening Sanctuary (6.00pm - 2.00am) for people to go along and not feel entirely alone. I believe that mental wellbeing issues are, intrinsically, a kind of private hell for the individual and, therefore, very isolating as a result. Such a service can be a vital way for people who are both  'high-functioning' or unable (that still have no NHS psychiatric help), for example, to go and chill, relax, and connect with others who are struggling to cope on their own. Having said that, I often feel unable to attend Mosaic physically at both ends of my chronic health condition. Sometimes, it literally feels like going to the moon and back, even though it's only one bus journey and about a 500 metre walk up Effra road. But now I know that there is someone on the end of the phone who will do their best to help.

As a sufferer of Bipolar Affective Disorder (BAD - and a very generic label for this type of illness), it is easy for the outside world to assume that I am coping and more than able. However, since around 27 July 2019, my 'disorder' went exponentially out of control. Using any kind of moodscale or mood graph, fellow sufferers would understand that such scales/graphs are subjective. These measuring devices do not explain that the difference between 'stable' and on the brink of mania or suicidal ideation, is not a nice handy incremental rise or fall. Let's liken it to the Decibel Scale. (I have a BSc (Hons) in Music, so it seems more appropriate to use that as a measuring stick.)

"Miss Mo Presents" proudly supports non-gender specific Mental Wellbeing especially for Women's Health Awareness during all phases of the menopause. It is a disgrace that research into the links between hormones & genes in relation to menopausal women with bipolar affective disorder is not being addressed comprehensively as far as I can gather. Please prove me wrong - if you know anyone who is - do enlighten me.

PLEASE HELP TO END MENTAL HEALTH STIGMA NOW.

Spread the love
