Story
I am running the Hackney Half Marathon next Sunday, 26/09/21 for REGAIN - a charity which helps support the independence of British men and women who have become tetraplegic following a sports injury.
I originally signed up for the Hackney half in May 2020 and it appears to have crept up on me! Luckily running was my main coping mechanism throughout lockdown so there was plenty of time to train!
I would greatly appreciate your support for this wonderful cause which is very close to my heart.
9 years ago I had a skiing accident resulting in a C4/5 fracture (spinal injury), I was however fortunate enough to not sustain a spinal cord injury and underwent emergency neurosurgery that night.
I spent the ‘best’ part of 6 months laid up in bed with a neck brace and had a lot of thinking time. During this time I decided I wanted to run a half marathon and raise money for a spinal cord injury charity (At the time I was pretty concussed and very unrealistic, thinking this would be possible within a year…. In my dreams!!!)
I had previously seen myself as an athlete and very much felt like I’d been stripped of my self-identity. Regaining this important part of my life was extremely challenging, truly testing my resilience and mental toughness. I am forever in awe of the mental and physical strength of those who have sustained much more serious, life changing injuries yet continue to thrive and live active lives.
I hope that by supporting this charity many more tetraplegics will be able to lead fulfilling lives and pursue their sporting dreams.
❤️ 🏃🏽♀️ ❤️ Thank you 😘
