We raise funds for The National Hospital to improve the lives of neurology patients

Story

Andrea, who has cared for me through a very troubled time in life. The initial "awake craniotomy" operation then radio-therapy and 12 months chemo-therapy. Then 3 major operations in a 4 week period. After that come more chemo, radio and I had a drain tucked in to may skull to relieve the pressure. I have been on various types of chemo-therapy ever since.

Andrea has stood by me for over 13 years. Words seem inadequate.

I love you, happy 40th birthday.

The National Hospital Development Foundation.

In conjunction with,

The Brain Tumour Unit Appeal - Transforming Brain Cancer Care.

The £2.5 million Brain Tumour Unit Appeal began in 2008 and so far £1.8 million has been raised. We’ve used the money to get both the Clinical Database and the Brain Tissue Bank up and running. Almost all the medical staff are in place and a substantial amount of the equipment has been purchased – but we can’t stop here...

We Need Your Help

All that remains to be done is the refurbishment and final equipping of the 14-bed ward itself. We also need to provide initial funding for a dedicated palliative care specialist and nurse. Altogether this will cost £1 million. If we can generate the funds we need by October, building can begin this year and be completed before Christmas 2010.

The truth is that brain cancer in the UK is woefully under funded and under researched.  There is no one dedicated unit for the disease in the UK.  Yet each year 5,000 people are diagnosed with primary brain cancers, while 60,000 others develop secondary brain tumours.  It affects all ages, and survival rates are lower than any other cancer.

To help us complete the new Brain Tumour Unit at The National Hospital and start to transform brain cancer care, please make a donation now. Thank you.

Donating through Justgiving is quick, easy and totally secure. It’s also the most efficient way to sponsor me: National Hospital Development Foundation gets your money faster and, if you’re a UK taxpayer, Justgiving makes sure 25% in Gift Aid, plus a 3% supplement, are added to your donation.

About the charity

There are 14.7million people – that’s more than one in six – in the UK living with a neurological condition. Here at the country's leading neurological centre, we’re passionate about supporting the hospital to help improve the lives of patients through treatment and research.
