March 2010 - Blogs

March kicked off with a half marathon training race along the coastline in Llanelli, it was a beautiful sunny day (with a bit of a chilly wind). After not quite realising how far Llanelli was, Charlie became the support team once again, driving me and cheering me on. I stuck to my plan (9 minute miles) and had a bit of energy left with even a faster finishing mile completing the 13.1 miles in 1 hour 57 mins. Works been manic so training has had to fit in here and there but Jo and I finshed the month with a 20 mile race in Bedford. Charlie and Dad pulled out all the stops with their support and followed us on their bikes with drink refills and the all important jelly babies! Again we stuck to a plan and both of us ran strong and made it to the finish line in 2 hours 54 mins. So, for those of you who want to challenge us on a target time for the full 26.2 miles, there's some statistics to help!
Still got to keep the training up but I'm now really excited and looking forward to London, thanks everyone for all your support, not just donating, but your everyday support checking on progress and general encouragement, it's kept me going!

Now that really was a short month but I have managed to rack quite a few miles up. I've had some interesting morning and evening winter runs, been particualrly aware of badly behaved dogs (and owners)and during a miserable dark, rainy and cold winters evening run I realised that the only other runners I was passing must also be training for the marathon - sensible people would have been tucked up inside with a glass of vino!
My longest run has been a 20 mile canal towpath run last Sunday which made me actually realise that 26.2 miles is quite a long way! I've been eating like a horse and have taken out shares in ibuprofen - it works miracles.
Now looking into March - the big month for training (and eating!). I'm holding a golf tournament at West Wilts Golf Club on Wed, 24th March and we're launching our 'Dedicate a Mile' competition where you can get us to run one of the 26 miles in celeration or memory of one of your loved ones - all we ask is a fiver for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Anyway, enough of all this - on with the trainers............

Where’s January gone? Our 16 week countdown to race day started on Sunday 3rd January, forgetting about all other New Year resolutions, all I needed to do was run and run and run and run, so I had a training plan ready. One problem cropped up early in the month - I hadn’t built in an overnight dumping of snow that seemed to take weeks to clear. With no immediate back up I signed up to the local gym (along with everyone else in January!) to make sure I could still get in some miles.
By mid January I was back on track and even managed a 14 miler on a beautiful sunny winter’s day, that’s the longest I’ve ever run! I’m not convinced I could have managed the other 12 but lets hope that changes over the next couple of months!

So far so good with my training plan this year. After a bit of a hip injury in December and various trips to the Chiropractor I was back on track by January. Bit slowed up by the snow – even in London – so headed to the swimming pool instead, providing a good break from the pounding of running. The highlight this month had to be my run around Greenwich Park and Blackheath. The struggle up the hill was more than paid off by the amazing views over London. And the low point came while running around Ruskin Park, getting over taken by a toddler on a tricycle. Think I need to work on my speed!

Our Fundraising
We are delighted to have reached 22% of our target and we’re really looking forward to some more fundraising events. Becky is holding a golf tournament at West Wilts Golf Club on Wednesday 24th March, so if you’re in the area and want to join in, let her know, tee off is at 2pm. While the folks, Jan and Graham are organising various events, including a trip to Capel Manor Gardens.

We’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who has donated on our page – for every £1 we get we feel more and more motivated to get out there on a cold, dark evening. Your donation is going straight to Macmillan and it’s already helping to support cancer patients in the UK. For all those who have yet to donate – what are you waiting for? Dec 2009 - Launch

Welcome to our London 2010 Marathon page. It's here where you can help Macmillan Cancer Support help cancer patients, their families and their friends across the UK. In return for your donation - and to say a big thank you - we will run 26.2 miles in the Big Smoke. Not a bad deal!

Yes, we're taking on the London 2010 Marathon (well, it is about time and if we only ever manage one marathon then London has to be the one!)

We have carefully chosen the charity we wanted to run for. Macmillan not only provides medical, but also vital emotional and practical support to cancer patients, their carers and their families. And it's a charity that's very close to our hearts so we're running in memory of family and friends, to celebrate them and to say THANK YOU to Macmillan for all the amazing work they do.

Your donation, however big or small, will make the difference. Just to put it in to perspective:
£10 - will pay for 20 copies of Macmillan's cancer support leaflets, letting people know where they can go for support.
£24 - would pay for a Macmillan physiotherapist for one hour
£68 - would run a Macmillan Information and Support Centre for one hour
£100 - would support the Macmillan Benefits Helpline
You get the jist.

So, you see, you really can make a difference.

And we'll make sure we update this page regularly so you know what we're up to. We'll be posting features like:

Moment of the Month
How well our training plans are going
Racing News
Who's running the best! (well sisters can be so competitive)
Our target and goals
Updated pictures

We're also going to be launching our 'Running a Mile For You' competition in the New Year where you get the chance to tell us why we should dedicate one of the 26 miles to you or someone you know.

Thank you for visiting our London 2010 page and thank you for your support.

Love Becs and Jo xx
