Story
Hello Everyone!
Every two years, Cambridge and Oxford swimmers compete in the ‘Cross-Channel Swim’, a relay covering the 21 miles between Dover and Calais. The often rough and chilly waters are a challenge to any swimmer, with past crossings taking up to ten hours. 2008 represents the 6th Match with both teams level with two wins each and one draw recorded. The swim will take place between 29 June and 6 July, with our team hoping to tip the tables in its favour.
Our 2008 Cambridge team have decided to add a little additional inspiration and purpose to the occasion and ask for donations to the Cambridge-based James Whale Fund for Kidney Cancer.
Approximately 7000 people in the UK are diagnosed with kidney cancer each year, yet it rarely attracts public attention. While surgery is often an option for kidney cancer, 30% of patients have a form of the disease that cannot be cured by surgery. Kidney cancer is very resistant to conventional chemotherapy and radiotherapy, so new treatments must be found.
Please support us with a donation!
Many thanks,
University of Cambridge Channel Swim Team
