Improving Lives Plymouth is a long established charity, working within the city of Plymouth and the surrounding area. We run information, advice and support services for people with disabilities and long-term health conditions.

Story

We want to develop and extend our sensory garden at our Mannamead Health and Well-being Hub. Last year a very uninspiring, predominantly concrete outdoor space was turned into an inviting and accessible outdoor area and wildlife habitat. It has proved so popular we want to develop and extend it into more of the centres grounds. This will enable more of our community to join in and benefit from the joys of outdoor life in this urban setting.

Members of our community who have sensory impairments, learning disabilities and carers, to name but a few, can help us turn our outdoor space into a bigger haven for wildlife and well-being and enjoy the fruits of their activity. They can plant, tend and cook on site, as well as learn new skills and knowledge they can practice at home as well. As well as gardening there will be opportunity to join in with activities across the whole of our Hub activities and projects.

We have learned that many of our clients were lacking in confidence to access outdoor spaces. They also felt unable to take part in gardening activities as they thought they did not have the skills to do this. We have encouraged them to use the space and take part in some practical sessions. Our gardening group is growing in size all the time and we envisage this trend continuing, as we develop and extend!

To enable us to do this we need to raise at least £10,000, to break up more bleak concrete areas, bringing them alive with flowers, fruit and vegetables and develop associated activities at the hub.
