Story
Recently We started the development of our sensory garden and from this we have experience big changes in some of our service users.
X is a quiet, shy lady who has been attending our services for several years. She has a learning disability and struggles with comprehension of situations and expressing herself. She started helping in the ILP garden last year when it was created. She hadn't tried gardening before and it quickly became obvious that she loved weeding, digging, tidying, planting and sowing seeds.
We have noticed that as her confidence has increased, she has become more happy, outgoing and relaxed. She seems able to explain herself more clearly and during gardening sessions she encourages other service users to get involved in tasks, if she feels they need help.
Her enthusiasm for gardening led the staff team to discuss the possibility of her undertaking voluntary work in this field and a referral was subsequently made to PLUSS to support her with this.
