Young people spend an average of 190 days in school each year, which is why, this summer, we're asking you to take part in our hero event, the 190 Challenge, to raise vital funds and awareness for LGBT+ young people across the UK.
Our research found that 74% of LGBT+ pupils who have never had positive messaging from their school about being LGBT+ have contemplated suicide. This is a shocking statistic, and with your help we can change this.
We know that positive LGBT+ messaging in schools is linked to improved mental health - and positive messaging is what we do. We provide resources for teachers to use in the classroom, we train young LGBT+ adults (18-25) who go into schools and tell their story, and we support teachers to set up pride groups in their schools - a safe place for all young people to feel connected and supported.
Step up this pride season and walk 190 km to help change the future for the next generation. As a guide 1km is about 1,400 steps so this challenge is something that can be fitted into your daily life. You have until the end of August to complete your challenge and can do it alone or as part of a team.
And if walking isn’t your thing you can run, cycle, swim or choose any activity you like. Or if you prefer you can just make a donation to support this campaign - without putting on your running shoes!
If you want to take part then click on the ‘start fundraising’ button on the right - from here you will be able to create your own fundraising page. Once you have set this up, share the link with as many people as possible and start fundraising. There are also lots of other ways you can raise money to help - hold a bake sale, run a quiz or a raffle - and our fundraising pack has lots of ideas to help you hit your fundraising goals. We ask that people try and raise a minimum of £200 and if you raise £500 or more we’ll send you a JLU t-shirt!
Your support will help us to reach more young people, deliver more school talks and help teachers with the resources they need to provide inclusive education for all young people.
