Story

FDAMH is celebrating 40 years of supporting the mental health of the Falkirk and District Community!

Did you know? Every year approximately 1 in 70 adults in Falkirk District use FDAMH's services! If you live or work here its more than likely that you know someone that we've been privileged to support maybe a family member, friend, colleague, fellow student...maybe you?

Wonderful, saved my life.

Back in 1981 a small determined group of local people, seeing the isolation and loneliness afflicting people in the community who suffered from mental health problems, set up a lunch club to provide support, companionship and a safe space to those in need.

Did you know? FDAMH is and always has been an independent charity! We're not part of any other mental health organisation and we have to obtain all of our own funding through support from the statutory sector, grant-making bodies and the generous donations of our community.

With 40 years of experience and a lot of hard work and development behind us, FDAMH has definitely expanded! Our services now include...

immediate help,

After the call to FDAMH I felt like I could do things for myself and I could start at least to take the steps away from the very dark place I was in...the worker offered to call me back again as I was so distressed I worried if I could go on and they just seemed to care and that made such a difference

Felt like a burden had been lifted and was such a relief to talk to them

talking therapies,

It has literally changed my life. For the first time in years I actually feel like ME. Its a great feeling.

I am so lucky to have been linked with my counsellor - she helped me to work through a huge amount and ultimately deal with a rape from years ago. I looked forward to my sessions each week and she encouraged me...the work with FDAMH has been wonderful for me.

one-to-one and group education and support around self-care and personal development,

My mental wellbeing has vastly improved. It's the gift that keeps giving, as I now use the tools I have been given to deal with all aspects of my life. The worker was patient and understanding, whilst still encouraging me to gently push against those walls my mind had tried to build.

I have taken so much from the course, this is the first time in years I have felt good, thank you!

The course helped me realise I wasn't on my own in my struggles, and that it wasn't anything to be ashamed or embarrassed about.

specialist support for Families and Carers and people bereaved as a result of suicide,

I thought my family was falling apart. No matter how hard I tried, nothing seemed to be working. Family and Carers at FDAMH helped me focus my energies in the right way, firstly on myself then outwards to my family.

At a moment of real crisis in my family, they made time to see me and my son. They listened and supported us to find our way through. No other service was available to us at that time. The crisis was then, not months down the line.

and not forgetting a lively team still dedicated to tackling isolation!

It has been good to keep in touch with people in the "outside world" while going through this pandemic. I certainly felt supported. This group has made a huge difference to my lockdown experience and mental health.

Sadly, we are all too aware of the significant damage that the pandemic crisis continues to inflict on mental wellbeing right here in Falkirk District. Your support will help FDAMH to keep responding to the needs of people in our community, whatever the reasons for their pain.

You can help us continue to be a 'light in a dark place' for those in need. Support mental health right here in Falkirk District by joining in with our fundraising or by creating your own 40 for FDAMH themed fundraising challenge!

But perhaps most important of all, if you know someone that is struggling, do let them know FDAMH is here.

And finally, if you're setting up your own fundraiser we'd love you to let us know what you're up to and tell us how you're getting on!
