Today Im coping but I have been really struggling. I already suffer with anxiety and depression and being in lockdown has made it worse...
... but I always have my Womans Aid support worker to help me through tough times.
These are the words of someone we have been supporting during this time in lockdown. The COVID-19 outbreak has increased the risk for those experiencing domestic abuse and this has been evident in the fear and anxiety our workers have heard from the women, children and young people they support. The GWA workers are experts in this field, and have worked tirelessly to adapt the ways in which they support, in order to keep being a safe space for survivors at this time.
But we need your help. The families in refuge have come to refuge without many of their belongings, there are more women calling our helpline and once lockdown has eased, we expect an influx of referrals and more families fleeing their abuser. Many coming into refuge have little to no belongings with them, children have had to leave their friends and their family for safety - we need donations to ensure that the transition they have during what is a really emotional, uncertain and challenging time, is as safe, supportive and comfortable as possible. Previous donations have:
- Ensured a full-time position of a Crisis Support Worker for a whole year
- Group support sessions for families
- Food vouchers and activity packs for families in refuge
- Put together a journaling book for the young people leaving refuge to help them transition into our Follow On service
These donations have an impact. These donations are important. We have some words from people we have supported noting how GWA has been facilitating their recovery:
I have told my support worker everything I need help with and shes helping me with it all.
If Im having a bad day I try to get dressed and get myself out the house for a walk it makes me feel more energetic and level headed I also like to put my music on and sit out in the veranda on nice days and let my little boy play with his toys so I dont feel guilty for not doing activities with him when Im not coping this also makes my mood better.
I have really struggled and sometimes havent seen a light at the end of the tunnel and my support worker has really helped me through these difficult times.
For the 75 days we have been in lockdown, we are asking for help in raising £100 for each day of this lockdown. So please, donate what you can, share our campaign with your friends. Every penny matters. Thank you so much for your continual support, it really means a lot to us and to the incredible staff at Glasgow Women's Aid.
