Story

Its Glitchs Un4gettable 4th Birthday!

Over April and may we are celebrating turning 4 and its the perfect opportunity to celebrate with our friends and supporters. This year our birthday month is all about the number 4 - you will have to 4give us for the terrible puns in advance!

For the last 4 years we have been awakening a generation of digital citizens equipped to create and demand for safe online spaces for all. We believe that everyone should feel confident and equipped to engage in online and offline spaces - particularly those disproportionately affected by discrimination, including women and girls, people of colour and non-binary people. In 2020 we launched a nationwide survey to investigate the impact of lockdown measures under the Coronavirus Act on the experiences of women and non binary people online. 34% of respondents of our Covid-19 survey reported that online abuse had a professional, social or financial impact on them; that figure rose to 48% for Black and minoritised women and non-binary people.

One respondent said:

I try to spend less time online but I live alone and my health isn't great so it means really becoming isolated and depending on a few trusted friends to stay in contact with rather than connecting with my community more widely. I definitely feel my performance at work has suffered and I feel at risk of sanction or not having my contract renewed due to the impact on my ability to focus and my mental health

69% of those surveyed said they felt anxious after experiencing online abuse.

We cannot let online abuse continue to have such a damaging effect, stifle freedom of expression and erode our democracy. We need to fix these glitches in our online spaces! What we want for our birthday this year is your help to achieve 4 ambitions:

1. Deliver 8 free workshops over the next 12 months

2. Deliver 2 new free resources on tech accountability and online safety

3. Launch a campaign that ensures Government include women in upcoming online safety legislation

4. Conduct research on the causes and drivers of online abuse

Donate £4, £14 or £40 to this campaign, or get together with your friends or colleagues to raise £400. Or sign up to become a regular donor using the links below!

Thank you so much and Happy Birthday to us!
