Story

MND24 - 24 hours dedicated to MND research

WHAT IS MND24?

Founded in 2020 by Sandy Stirling, MND24 is a global initiative raising funds for vital motor neuron disease (MND) research. MND24 asks you to take part in any sport or activity for 24 hours in March 2022. You can either set yourself a 24 hour challenge or divide the hours up with a team challenge. For example, twelve friends could take on a two hour team cycle challenge, or 24 friends could all dance for an hour!

We want you to participate in this challenge on your terms, so although this is based around 24 hours, think of it as a theme and get creative! Set yourself a challenge that suits you and your own personal circumstances best. Do whatever you want just as long as its safe and even better, something that's fun!

WHAT IS MOTOR NEURON DISEASE (MND)?

Also known as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), MND is a group of progressive neurological disorders that destroy motor neurons, the cells that control skeletal muscle activity such as walking, breathing, speaking and swallowing. MND is a life-shortening, debilitating disease that affects both adults and children. Currently, there is no cure for this cruel disease.

WHAT DOES MND24 AIM TO DO?

MND24s mission is to support cutting-edge research with the ultimate goal of helping find a cure for this currently fatal disease.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE TOGETHER

MND24 brings together charities, sporting organisations and passionate individuals from across the world to help support MND research by taking part in one big, brilliant 24-hour challenge in March every year with 2022 set to be the most significant year yet.

WHAT IS THE MND24 FUNDRAISING CHALLENGE?

MND24 is open to everyone anywhere in the world. You can take part as an individual or part of a team. Simply choose a sport or activity that you can take part in for a total of 24 hours albeit an in-person or virtual event and get your friends and family involved too.

As mentioned above, we want you to participate in this challenge on your terms, so although this is based around 24 hours, think of it as a theme and get creative! Set yourself a challenge that suits you and your own personal circumstances best. Do whatever you want just as long as its safe and even better, something that is fun!

WHY SUPPORT THE EUAN MACDONALD CENTRE?

The Euan MacDonald Centre for Motor Neuron Disease Research is based at the University of Edinburgh and is a not-for-profit, charitable network of over 200 researchers across Scotland. Euan MacDonald Centre researchers are conducting pioneering work to find vital new information about motor neurons in order to create new drug treatments and improve the quality of life for people with MND.

Our mission is to

undertake research into MND, both laboratory-based and patient-centred projects

deliver training for the next generation of MND research leaders

provide a network for those involved in MND research across Scotland

work with Scottish healthcare professionals and other charities to increase awareness of MND and MND research

By being part of MND24, and choosing to support the Euan MacDonald Centre, you are helping raise awareness of motor neuron disease and ensuring Euan MacDonald Centre researchers move closer to their aim to make discoveries that will slow, stop and eventually reverse MND. Thank you.
