The NNRF Anti-Destitution Project focuses on helping refused asylum seekers with their immediate needs such as food and disposable cash, but also provides help and support around their immigration cases via referrals.
One of the aims of the project is to alleviate the destitution of refused asylum seekers by distributing small cash allowances. Many recipients tell us how crucial this support is to them; as it enables them to catch a bus to appointments or top up their mobiles to keep in touch with their solicitors. It grants a level of empowerment, and gives recipients a semblance of membership within the wider community.
Thanks to the to the hard work of Anti-Destitution staff and volunteers, and the generosity of our individual donors and supporters, 52 people accessed housing support and 1,655 food parcels were delivered during the first year of the pandemic. One of our food delivery volunteers told us:
We don't just deliver food and clothing, we also deliver hope. When we added some flowers to the packages, everybody noticed how much impact it had. Every time we deliver something, we also deliver the message: "YOU AREN'T ALONE which is more important than anything else to someone who is alone in the country and doesn't know anyone, doesn't know the language and is unfamiliar with the culture here. Hopefully we will be carrying on as long as they need us.
Since Covid-19 restrictions have eased, more asylum seekers have been exposed to homelessness and destitution following the refusal of their asylum claim, and they are turning to us for help and support.
The entire provision of anti-destitution services relies on the generosity of donors. In order to keep this vital service running, we are asking you to help us provide essential services for the most vulnerable asylum seekers in Nottingham.
£5 could fund 300 cups of tea or coffee
£10 could cover the cost of ingredients to feed 40 people a hot meal
£20 could cover the monthly expenses of a delivery volunteer
£40 would provide vital funds for a destitute asylum seeker for a month
Throughout December our virtual advent calendar will be highlighting some of the reasons why this project is so vital, and why we need your help. Please follow our Facebook and Twitter pages to find out more.
