Welwyn Wheelers have successfully supported Better Leisure (GLL) in obtaining a grant of £25,000 from British Cycling, towards the cost of replacing and upgrading the velodrome lighting at Gosling Sports Park.

The lamps used in the existing floodlights become obsolete in the next 24 months.

In addition British Cycling have issued new lighting specifications for all outdoor cycling facilities. This means we need to upgrade the floodlights to meet the new British cycling specifications. The new lights will also be much more energy efficient, reducing running costs and carbon-footprint of the Velodrome at Gosling Sports Park.

Without significant investment, evening usage of the velodrome would be compromised, meanaing events such as track league and evening winter training could cease.

The total cost of instalation of the new LED floodlighting is £85,000

As part of the successful BC grant application of £25,000 submitted through GLL, Welwyn Wheelers have committed to raising a minimum of £12,000 towards the project.

The Greenwich Leisure board of directors have now approved the Floodlight upgrade to proceed.
