Story

The World Congress of Anaesthesiologists (WCA) 2024 in Singapore is a world-class international conference with global anaesthesia at the heart - with representation from 130 different countries, it allows anaesthesia providers from different backgrounds and resource settings to come together, learn & collaborate, and return home with vital new knowledge, skills and connections.

The costs involved in attending an international conference mean that these opportunities are often inaccessible for anaesthetists from lower and middle income countries such as Zambia.

WFSA (World Federation of Societies of Anaesthesiologists) has a scholarship programme available, however there is not enough funding available for all who would like to attend, and those currently still completing their postgraduate training in anaesthesia are ineligible to apply.

ZADP are campaigning to raise enough money to support a Zambian physician anaesthetist (either a current trainee or recent graduate of the MMed/STP program) to attend this conference, by covering the cost of their flights, accommodation and conference registration.

Successful applicants will need to have an abstract accepted for presentation or be an invited speaker in the conference program. In the event that there is more than one successful applicant, a locally run selection process within Zambia will determine who receives the scholarship.

By agreement with WFSA, the ZADP Scholar would also be able to attend additional events provided for the WFSA Scholars, giving further opportunities for networking and collaboration.

This scholarship would open up an opportunity that many practicing in higher income countries take for granted. Please consider donating whatever you can towards this campaign.

Any funds raised but not utilised by this campaign will be directed to support ZADP's ongoing projects in Zambia - along with any remaining funds if we exceed our fundraising target.

Thank you!

** UPDATE 1st DECEMBER 2023 **

Dear all,

Thank you so much for your generosity so far to everyone who has donated and shared this campaign.

We interviewed this week to find our Global Scholar - we have not one but THREE fantastic candidates who have all had work accepted for presentation at WCA, all deserve the opportunity to be able to present, and are all motivated to gain knowledge and experience that will help progress the work they are already doing to support safer surgery in Zambia.

To this end - we would like to raise our fundraising target again to support all three anaesthetists in taking up this incredible offer. This is a potentially life-changing experience for the individual and the benefits this will extend to their departments in Lusaka and Ndola, and to the wider anaesthetic and medical community in Zambia are vast.

Please keep an eye out for our Christmas fundraising campaign on social media (@gadpartnerships) and share widely - thank you all again and wishing you all the best over the festive season!
