Story
Headway member Albertina Tavares, has been inspired by the challenge and fundraising Captain Tom achieved and decided with the help of her husband Antonio and the team at Headway to walk 200m+ each day throughout December, up until Wednesday 23rd.
Her challenge is taking place at the F.B. Fields athletics track using her walking frame( Monday to Saturday, weather permitting and indoors at Springfield Leisure Centre if needed) .This is all the more amazing as she has suffered from Pontine Demyelination, a brain injury which strips the protective sheath away from the nerves of the brain stem, since 2008 and at the time was told she might not walk again.
Headway have been supporting her family since 2009 and initially after the brain injury struck, her husband Antonio was having to carry Albertina up to their 1st floor flat but with Headway's help the family found a new home to accommodate her physical impairments.
Since becoming a member of Headway she had been making great progress through using our services such as Neuro-physiotherapy, Cranial Sacral therapy, exercise and swimming therapy to the point where she was able to walk with the use of a frame.
Sadly her physical and mental well being was severely affected when Lockdown was put in place and without the life changing therapy sessions provided by Headway, she stopped walking and exercising, returning to using her wheelchair.
Following the loss in fundraising throughout 2020 to Headway Jersey of £150,000 due to Covid-19, her challenge with the continued support from Headway, is to raise £2,300 for her SOS( Save Our Services) Headway Christmas Appeal, throughout December. She is asking for the support from the Jersey community to help her with her fundraising, which will help Headway continue to provide our life changing services.
