One of Amber River NI's own - Peter Bingham is taking part in The Gralloch 2024! ...
Having not turned a pedal with much effort for a few years, in November I bought a gravel bike with a view to enjoying some more relaxing off road cycling. Not long after a couple of pals suggested we sign up for 'The Gralloch' in Scotland, so I thought 'why not, bit of craic'. Turns out the Gralloch is a UCI Gravel World Series Race with a load of professional and ex-pro cyclists - maybe not the jolly I thought....

So after a couple of decent months training, a couple of months of illness where all the training has vanished out the window, I'll be looking to attend this in May very much as a participant, not a competitor! It was suggested this could be an opportunity to raise a few pounds for Amber River NI's chosen charity, FOODSTOCK. So I cant really back out now... If you feel this is a worthwhile cause, then please feel free to donate what you can.
Few after event thoughts:
Gravel racing is MUCH harder than on the road. Aches and pains appear everywhere, not just the legs.
Scottish Gravel is MUCH harder than here. In fact, it’s mainly rocks.
Cramp is a real bugger with 20k left to go (note to self, drink more water.....)
I'm nowhere nearly as fit as I thought.
Unsurprisingly, I didn't qualify for the Worlds in Belgium! There's always next year......
Thank you to everyone that has donated – it is greatly appreciated and far beyond what I thought would be raised for a great cause supporting those in more need than us.
