Story
4/5 people in the UK claim their body image has negatively affected their mental health.
1/8 people experience suicidal thoughts because of poor body image.
Body image issues are connected to several serious mental illnesses including Eating Disorders, Body Dysmorphia, Anxiety and Depression.
Addressing body image issues is an emergency, and the support available is scarce, where many people are placed on waitlist and passed from service to service because they are either too sick or not sick enough. This is the reality of living with serious mental health conditions and Eating Disorders today.
Bella came to us in her time of greatest need; she had planned her suicide because she didn't feel able to go on living with the shame and isolation she felt in connection with her mental health and body image. Speaking to a Mentor helped her to open up, to rebuild relationships with her family and friends. She did not go ahead with her suicide plan.
“My time with Been There had initially been to help me with my body image, but it helped me with so much more. Ranging from my relationship with my parents, feeling suicidal, having someone to support me when I was let down by mental health professionals, my job, and so much more. My time with Been There genuinely changed my life and played such a huge role in my decision not to go through with my suicide plan.”
We can provide compassionate, consistent support to Mentees like Bella. We can be the person for them to turn to in their greatest hour of need.
