Story

Since 2011 Cranleigh School has been partnering with Beyond Ourselves to offer quality education to orphans and vulnerable children in the Copperbelt region of Zambia. In particular Cranleigh has a long lasting and meaningful relationship with Kawama Community School in Kitwe. Over this time, the generous support from the Cranleigh community has provided the building and maintenance of six classrooms, a toilet block and kitchen, and given nearly a 1000 children access to a high standard primary education. The District Education Board cite Kawama Community School as an excellent example of practice for other Community Schools in the Copperbelt. Many of our students have had the opportunity to visit Kawama and the impact of those visits is significant.

Some reflections from students who have just returned from their trip to Zambia:

Our trip to Zambia was one of the most eye-opening and rewarding experiences of my life. Over two weeks, we explored the country, met incredible people, and took part in projects that challenged our perspectives on education, community, and gratitude.

We spent a week at Kawama School, teaching subjects like first aid, maths, art skills, and Jolly Phonics. The children were so eager to learn, and their enthusiasm made every lesson a joy. Even with limited resources, their willingness to succeed was inspiring. It showed me the power of education. Not just as a way to learn, but as a tool for hope and change in their society. The teachers’ dedication and the students’ curiosity left a lasting impression on us, and is definitely something we have all taken home and applied to our everyday lives.

The work that Beyond Ourselves is doing in Zambia is truly remarkable. By supporting schools, developing community projects, and focusing on long-term sustainability, they’re helping to create real, lasting change. Seeing the impact firsthand made me realise that volunteering isn’t just about giving; it’s about learning, sharing, and growing alongside others.

This trip has changed how we see the world. I’ve learned to appreciate the value of education, the importance of gratitude, and the strength of community. Moving forward, I want to use these experiences to inspire others, appreciate what we have, to help where we can, and to remember that even small actions can make a big difference.
