Story
St Paul's partnership with Beyond Ourselves was launched in 2018 with a highly successful whole school fundraising walk. The community, staff and students walked, swam and rowed the distance between Barnes and Ndola in Zambia where the charity are based, raising over £35,000 in the process. Since then, St Paul's have run five successful trips to Zambia where students have been able to support the incredible work Beyond Ourselves does in the community and learn valuable lessons from the experience.
This July 18 students from St Paul's will go out to Zambia to support the work of Beyond Ourselves, learning about a new culture and experiencing what life is like in Zambia. They will also spend some time at Limapela School which has benefitted from its links with Beyond Ourselves to see the wonderful work they are doing.
Beyond Ourselves partner with Jolly Phonics and the Zambian Ministry of Education to deliver this amazing literacy programme. The cost of the training is only £2.50 per teacher so a £50 donation will support the training of 20 teachers!!
One St Paul's student who visited Zambia in a previous year said:
Following the trip, we now have a much better understanding of how overseas development charities, like Beyond Ourselves, function. We had the opportunity to do some volunteer work ourselves as well as hear directly from the Beyond Ourselves staff and the schools that benefit from their support. We have been inspired to help further the reach of the development provided by Beyond Ourselves, as well as the other development initiatives that we met with
Another St. Paul’s student highlighted the impact it had on them:
In our reflections during the trip, we realised the incredible impact that Zambia had on us through the opportunity to engage with local communities and experience local life. I truly believe that we will carry these experiences in our minds forever, and use them to view our everyday lives through a different lens
