We have some unexpected but exciting news!
During the past year, the Ministry of Education announced a complete overhaul of the education structure in Kenya. Our charity has therefore responded to this change in a most positive way for the children from local very poor families.
With your help, we could build the next floor of this small but amazing school in order to secure a secondary school education for a community that has little opportunity to help itself. Please, your generosity could make such a huge difference to so many people who need a hand up in life.
The school motto is 'creating better people' and that is exactly what this charity is all about.
A complete upheaval of the secondary education system in Kenya
Until now, the new school building has accommodated primary children in Years 6, 7 and 8. There has been a complete change in the education system, taking immediate effect, and Years 7 and 8 will no longer be part of the primary school structure. Years 7 and 8 will now form part of the new junior secondary school level in the national structure, with Year 9 also in this new tier.
With the new building ground floor in place, this means that our charity, your charity, can fill the gap in the education of the poorest children by offering them the chance to join a local, day, junior secondary school. The alternative for these children is to attend state schools, many with 100 to a class, with long distances to walk or travel each day. They definitely can't afford the better options which are boarding schools. Very often they would simply leave education at age 11, with the girls being offered for marriage or going to work as house helps.
New school and new name
As the new secondary school will run independently, it needed to have a new name to reflect the change in what it provides and the age of the children. The Ministry of Education have decided to call the school Bombolulu Secondary School and Training Foundation.
We have taken on a new head teacher and two new secondary school teachers. They are young, very well qualified and will take the school forward in a proactive and dynamic way.
The curriculum for this education level covers the classic basic subjects as well as a number or subjects to help the students acquire work skills. With the facilities we now have available the school building will also be used for further education for the local community and for initiatives such as the Rotary medical camp we hosted this year.
The new school will be for the poorest children
There will be continued education for some current Little Faces pupils plus we anticipate that children from other, local, primary schools will also apply to join us. The new school will be 100% sponsored, with no school fees, as we will only be taking in children from the very poorest of families who would absolutely not be able to afford to send their children to secondary school without this charity. It's something we can all be really proud of.
