Give the gift of reading. Give a second chance.

Organised by Shannon Trust

50% of people that end up in prison either can't read or struggle to read. Their life chances are limited from the word go. Thanks to your donation, Shannon Trust can enable them to learn to read, so they're better set up for a positive future.

Shannon Trust supports thousands of people in prison each year to learn to read and improve their numeracy skills. Currently, over 70% of people in prison struggle with reading and numeracy. Many cannot read at all. Learning reduces re-offending, and creates stronger, safer, communities for all.

Story

Imagine not being able to read messages or letters from loved ones, the menu or a job ad. Life would become challenging, quite quickly.

At Shannon Trust, we enable prisoners to teach other prisoners how to read, so they're better set up for a positive future.

By donating today, you can help give someone a second chance. Here's how your gift can help:

- £8 could start unlocking the power of reading for someone in prison by providing their first reading materials.

- £32 could provide Turning Pages books that help build confidence and a joy of reading.

- £50 could provide training and resources for prisoner mentors to teach their peers to read.

Here's Jodie's story:

Jodie spent the first 2 years of her prison sentence frightened that someone would discover she couldn't read. Scared of making herself vulnerable she hid her secret. But life changed for Jodie when a fellow prisoner talked to her about learning to read with Shannon Trust. Jodie's since studied for a degree with the Open University. She's also been a Shannon Trust Mentor helping others learn to read. She says: "I love telling my story to encourage other women. Education is everything to me now. It opens so many doors even when you can read just a little bit."

Thank you again for your support.
