Imagine walking miles every day to collect water from a contaminated stream just to have something to drink. For many children in rural Ghana, this is their reality. Lack of access to clean drinking water has become a major issue, and it's taking a toll on the health and education of these communities.
In 2016, only 36.34% of rural Ghanaians had access to clean drinking water, and while that number has improved to 41.41% in 2019, it's still not enough. Waterborne diseases are still responsible for two of the five leading causes of death in Ghana, with diarrheal diseases being the leading cause of death in children under five. The economic impact of these diseases is devastating, too, as many young children are forced to miss school in order to collect water.
That's where our clean water projects campaign comes in. By providing access to clean and reliable water for rural schools in the Atwima Kwanwoma Municipality of the Ashanti region, we can help reduce waterborne diseases and improve the health and education of these communities.
Currently, about 80% of rural schools in this district do not have access to portable water, and even the schools that do have access only serve a small number of students. By changing to a mechanized borehole, we can serve up to 2000-7000 people, including the schools and the surrounding community.
Our project seeks to achieve several outcomes. First, we want to reduce waterborne diseases in the schools and community, which will improve health and limit deaths caused by waterborne diseases like bilharzia. We also want to educate students on the dangers of using contaminated water and teach them good hygiene practices, which they can pass on to future generations.
Improved access to portable water in the schools will also help keep young people in education by limiting absences due to water collection. And finally, by hiring local community members to administer the program, we can help improve the economic status of families through children's education and contribute to the country's economic growth.
Please consider donating to our clean water projects campaign today. Your donation will help us provide clean and reliable water to schools and communities in rural Ghana, improving the health and education of these communities for years to come.
