In 2016, only 36.34% of rural Ghanaians had access to clean drinking water, and while that number has improved to 41.41% in 2019, it's still not enough. Waterborne diseases are still responsible for two of the five leading causes of death in Ghana, with diarrheal diseases being the leading cause of death in children under five. The economic impact of these diseases is devastating, too, as many young children are forced to miss school in order to collect water.
That's where our clean water projects campaign comes in. By providing access to clean and reliable water for rural schools in the Atwima Kwanwoma Municipality of the Ashanti region, we can help reduce waterborne diseases and improve the health and education of these communities.
Currently, about 80% of rural schools in this district do not have access to portable water, and even the schools that do have access only serve a small number of students. By changing to a mechanized borehole, we can serve up to 2000-7000 people!
