Story
Imagine a day without power.
Imagine the only light source in your home coming from a fire pit. The dim light source fills your house with smoke. The firewood runs out everyday. For Dennis, in Kenya, this was his reality. His entire familys day ended each day at 7pm, due to a lack of light. No more time for homework, no more time to spend time with family or friends, no more time to relax.
Many families with children attending the Compassion programme dont have access to national grid electricity and struggle to afford portable electric lights. Families also find it difficult to meet educational and basic healthcare costs.
A Barrier to Health and Education
Kerosene lamps are often the alternative light source. These lamps can cause burns and poison children who drink fuel stored in soft drink bottles. Other risks include missed time from school for children collecting fuel, child pneumonia and the risk of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease and lung cancer for adults. With kerosene lamps eating up 15% of a family's income, intervention is needed to provide light and save these families money. On top of this, children need light so they have more time for homework. These issues are preventable. Together, we can remove these risks and support green solutions to the climate crisis.
Access to a brighter future
Your support will provide sustainable clean energy through solar lamps to Compassion-supported children. In addition to having no running costs, solar lamps provide an essential source of safe energy as an alternative to solid fuel use for light.
Today, Dennis is very pleased to access a solar light through his Compassion project. He can now do his homework in the evenings - and his school grades have significantly improved. Moreover, Dennis caregivers are saving around £72 a month that was spent on kerosene. On top of this, the family have time back to relax, read their Bibles and socialise into the evening.
Compassion-supported children are born into poverty, but with an intervention that supports their educational opportunities and removes health-related setbacks, they will be empowered to thrive.
