Story

Diocese of Leeds Music is fundraising to enable some of its young choristers to perform Mendelssohn's great oratorio, 'Elijah', in the magnificent Ely Cathedral. The Gabrieli Consort's innovative 'Gabrieli Roar' initiative is aimed at supporting and encouraging youth choirs in events intended to inspire and delight.

Gabrieli's website describes Gabrieli Roar as 'a unique and exciting partnership between Gabrieli and a network of diverse British youth choirs. Taking a bold stance on the ability of young singers, we challenge them to perform side by side with our professional musicians and immerse them in the renowned energy of Gabrieli's performances and recordings.'

This July's residential trip to Oundle and Ely will provide our choristers - many of whom are from low-income or disadvantaged backgrounds - with the opportunity to perform with and learn from the professional singers and players of the celebrated consort and their conductor, Paul McCreesh. Over a period of five days, our choristers will be trained by professional voice coaches towards a performance of 'Elijah', as part of a massed choir of young singers from all over the country, supported by Gabrieli's professional choir and orchestra, in Ely Cathedral. The trip will also include a visit to Downing College, Cambridge.

We are heavily subsidising the substantial costs of this trip so that our choristers need only make a small contribution. Please help our deserving young singers to take advantage of this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity!
