Story
Our aim is for every pupil to have the opportunity to meet local Christians and discover what it means to be a Christian in the 21st century. Thanks to our current financial givers, we currently deliver free lessons to over 50 primary and secondary schools in Newham and equip local volunteers to share their faith appropriately alongside us. We also coordinate 50+ church partners to lead visits and host seasonal events for schools. This is with a team of less than 3 full time employees but with our 2 superpowers - volunteers and prayers!
We operate in an educational context. By law all state schools must provide religious education for all pupils from the age of 4-19, and 51% of the time should be spent studying the Christian faith.
We work ecumenically, giving opportunities for different churches and Christian traditions to be explored and compared. We aim to support every church in Newham to make connections and build relationships with schools and families in our community.
We do not charge schools or churches for our visits, events, training or resources. We are a non-for-profit registered charity, our funding comes mostly from Christian grants, churches and local givers.
Faith in Schools is a grassroots charity, starting from a collaboration between local schools, parents and Christians in Forest Gate. Over 2 decades, our work has grown to meet demand across nearly three quarters of Newham and has reached hundreds of thousands of children of all different faiths and none.
