From Collapse to Cancer-Free

When 14-year-old Paul suddenly collapsed while helping take down Christmas lights, his family rushed him to Loma Linda University Children’s Hospital. By New Year’s Eve, they learned the heartbreaking cause: leukemia.

Early chemotherapy was difficult, and Paul soon faced a severe allergic reaction that made his already aggressive cancer even harder to treat. His care team quickly pivoted to CAR T-cell therapy—an innovative treatment that reprograms a patient’s own cells to target cancer. Paul became only the second child in the Inland Empire to receive it at LLUCH.

The therapy worked, and even when signs of relapse appeared, Paul’s team acted fast. Because of close monitoring and cancer research at LLUCH, he received a bone marrow transplant while still in remission—giving him the best chance at long-term healing.

Today, Paul is cancer-free. He’s back to fishing, playing games, and enjoying the spicy foods he missed. His gratitude for the doctors, nurses, and staff is unmistakable. In his words: “They saved my life.”
