Goretti Got Us Good: Storm Goretti Damages NAWT Cornwall Rescue Centre

Storm Goretti has left our Cornwall Rescue Centre with severe damage to essential dog exercise and enrichment areas. Our animals are safe, but urgent work is needed to rebuild the spaces they rely on every day.

The National Animal Welfare Trust cares for and rehomes over 1300 animals a year, from cats and dogs to smalls and sheep! Active in all the communities it serves, the Trust has 5 rescue centres in the south of the UK, supported entirely by the generosity of the animal-loving public.

Story

Goretti Got Us Good: Storm Goretti Damages NAWT Cornwall Rescue Centre

We wanted to fully understand the impact of Storm Goretti before speaking out, and now, heartbreakingly, we can share just how badly it has affected our Cornwall Rescue Centre.

After a terrifying, sleepless night filled with the sound of violent winds and falling trees, this morning it became apparent that Storm Goretti has caused significant damage to key areas of the centre, striking at the very spaces that bring our rescue dogs safety, freedom and joy.

The worst damage has been to our secure exercise mound, the place where our rescue dogs can safely run off lead, play, and enjoy vital enrichment. Large sections of fencing have been ripped from the ground, fence posts torn out at their base, trees brought down onto the fencing, and the gate damaged beyond repair. At present, the area is completely unsafe for the dogs to use.

Equally heartbreaking, a large tree has fallen directly onto our storage garage, causing it to collapse entirely. Several other trees have fallen across our land, blocking walking, training and play areas used daily by our dogs.

Our immediate priority is simple but urgent: to make the exercise mound and enrichment equipment safe and secure again as quickly as possible. This space is not a luxury, it is essential to our dogs’ wellbeing. It’s where they burn off nervous energy, gain confidence, stimulate their minds, and experience moments of freedom while they wait for loving new homes.

The emotional and financial cost is significant and there’s no denying it, Storm Goretti really got us good.

But our dogs and cats are safe, still wagging, still trusting us, and we will do everything we can to get them back the safe, happy spaces they deserve.
