We are Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity. We stop at nothing to help give seriously ill children childhoods that are fuller, funner and longer. Because we believe no childhood should be lost to illness.

Story

James Golding is taking on Race Across America to raise vital funds for Great Ormond Street Childrens Hospital's new Children's Cancer Centre. James has challenged 10 corporate teams to race him and each other on Wattbikes in their offices to cycle the furthest and raise the most!

The aim of the challenge is to bring friends and colleagues of all abilities to create a relay race to see how far they can collectively ride in three days, whilst competing against nine other companies for the highest distance ridden and the most money raised for GOSH’s Cancer Centre. Whilst competing against other companies, competitors will also be competing against James Golding who at the same time will be racing in the actual Race Across America in his attempt to become the first British cyclist to win the world’s toughest bike race.

The race runs from the East coast covering 3100 miles across the country to the West coast reaching altitudes of 3300m and endures temperatures from below freezing up to 50 degrees in the desert. James will be aiming to complete the race in nine days, riding for approximately 22 hours a day covering between 350 and 360 miles a day and with just two to three hours of sleep per night.

James is no stranger to a challenge, he has twice fought cancer, been hit bit a truck cycling across America (not Race Across America) re-learnt to walk, taken on some of the world’s toughest cycling events and races with nearly 50 multi day events to his name. He has raised over £3 million for charity and is part of The Velodrome Challenge event that has now raised over £1.7million for GOSH. In 2024 James has set himself a challenge of not just winning the race but also establishing an event with longevity that would further support the GOSH Charity and this is your chance to be part of this incredible journey.

All money raised will help to provide:-

• A greater capacity to offer life-saving care for more children with cancer

• Digitally advanced inpatient wards tailored to children with cancer

• Increased access to clinical trials

• A new critical care unit with on-site accommodation

• An increased focus on nutrition, physical activity and wellbeing

• New imaging technology that better reveals what’s happening inside cancer cells

• A new hospital school, Outdoor spaces, including a roof garden.
