Story
Each year, around 20,000 people are detained under immigration powers, including our Hackney friends and neighbours. There is no time limit or automatic access to legal advice, and BID’s research shows that the majority of people in detention do not have a lawyer.
Bail for Immigration Detainees (BID) is a small charity based in Hackney that provides free legal advice and representation to people held in immigration detention centres across the UK.
With the support of staff, volunteers and pro bono lawyers, BID helps people understand their rights and apply for bail so they can be released. Each year, BID’s helpline answers over 9,000 calls from people in detention in need of free legal advice.
By supporting our Hackney Half Heroes, you will support BID’s work and help ensure that people in detention can understand and access the legal rights they are entitled to.
