Free Wheel North is a cycling development charity in Glasgow devoted to the right of everyone to access health, fresh air and exercise. Bikes, trikes, hand-cranks, adapted bikes, go-karts, side-by-sides, tandems, family bikes & a 7seater bike. A bike for everyone regardless of age or ability!

Story

Free Wheel North's (FWN) Glasgow Green Cycling Centre is Scotland's leading inclusive cycling centre with tens of thousands of visits a year from individuals and organisations as diverse as RNIB and Scottish Autism. We help people with every conceivable condition ranging from Cerebral Palsy to Limb Loss and from mental health issues to learning difficulties to get cycling. We can barely cope with demand as more and more people come to know of the joys of cycling in a place that excludes no-one and includes everyone. In 2019 we engaged 49,475 people in cycling activities.

Like many other charities we have been closed since the start of the lockdown and we are feeling the financial pressures. FWN has missed all of the donations that would have come with our usual visitors. In reality this would have brought in around £10,000 over the 3 month period from Easter to Summer, particularly with the weather as it has been. If you have ever been at our track on a nice day, you know how busy it can get.

We have a wide range of adapted bikes for people to use. We offer lessons to help people of all ages and abilities to get cycling, with our youngest being 3 years old and the oldest was 72 years young. We repair bicycles and offer advice on modifications and new purchases. We are active in the local community at Glasgow Green and at the White House in Maryhill, and take part in outreach projects where we take a selection of our bikes for local communities to try out.

FWN has regular guided rides helping riders to get to know the cycle paths in and around Glasgow, provide social interaction for those who are otherwise isolated, help to build peoples skills, confidence and stamina on the bike, and most importantly to help them maintain their physical and mental wellbeing.

Free Wheel North has a brilliant core team and a fantastic team of volunteers, all of whom contribute a great deal to what we do. Our volunteers help us at the track, in the workshop, on the rides, and behind the scenes . The Team is passionate about cycling and they help encourage others to enjoy the physical and mental benefits of cycling.

Unfortunately all of our sessions are cancelled just now. We are not sure what will happen after the pandemic but we want to be there and be able to provide sessions when it is safe to do so.

Free Wheel North needs your help to make sure we come out the other side of this pandemic and can continue to do our work, ensuring people of all ages and abilities have the opportunity to cycle. We may not survive without your support, and as Joe from the Brain Injury Rehabilitation Trust says, I do not know what Glasgow would do without FWN!

We know this is a difficult and uncertain time for everyone, and financial hardship is all around us, but if you could spare a few pounds to help us we would really appreciate it.
